Tres Hermanas Artist Residency

14-day, self-directed creative residencies

We are currently accepting applications for July 2026, January 2027, and February 2027.

Tres Hermanas Artist Residency is open to artists of all stages of their career, and especially those whose practice directly relates to the land, conservation, environmental awareness, community building, and social activism.

Our name comes from the indigenous practice of growing corn, beans and squash together. This is a practice in which each plant gives and receives from the others. Like the three sisters, we offer a creative space that encourages diversity and the circular exchange of knowledge and resources.

This residency is for:

  • Visual artists, writers, poets, filmmakers, photographers, makers and other creatives seeking uninterrupted time.

  • Artists whose work is low waste and small-scale/transportable. Artists will need to bring their own materials.

  • Practitioners who value cultural exchange, process, and place-based work.

  • Artists comfortable with simple living conditions and with being close to working land and farm sounds.

What’s included

  • 14 nights lodging in the superadobe dome (live/work space)

  • Daily breakfast & dinner (simple, seasonal, home-cooked, please advise us of any dietary restrictions in your application)

  • Round-trip airport transportation (to/from Guadalajara airport)

  • Access to shared kitchen, bathroom & common areas in the main house

  • Use of the property and grounds for creative practice (garden, terraces, walking paths)

  • Optional: inclusion in the Tres Hermanas archive (artists may donate or leave a record of their work or process)

The space

  • “Luna”, our super adobe dome: a compact, beautiful earthen structure with a bed, desk, and large central area for making and experimenting.

  • Facilities: there is no running water or bathroom inside the dome. Artists use a shared kitchen and a bathroom in the main house.

  • Connectivity: Starlink internet is available on the property but can be intermittent — many residents appreciate the slower pace this encourages. If you require reliable high-bandwidth access, please note this in your application.

FAQs

Q: Is the dome heated?
A: The dome is unheated; nights can be cool, especially in November and February. We provide blankets and recommend warm layers.

Q: Can I bring a partner or guest?
A: Residencies are single occupancy. If you’d like to bring a partner/guest, we will consider your request on a case-by-case basis and at an additional fee. No kids under 13 and no pets.

Q: Are there any required presentations or events?
A: No — residencies are self-directed. We may occasionally invite residents to a community dinner or informal sharing, but there is no required public presentation.

Q: Will I be able to leave Anima and explore during the residency?
A: Yes. We visit the town of San Isidro Mazatepec regularly, and the city of Guadalajara less often. You will have opportunities to get to know our town and shop for groceries/essentials. Visits to other local attractions can be arranged at an additional cost.
